I’m studying for a position in health care. In six months I hope to abandon the physically demanding activities associated with the building trades. Thanks for your business. WoodDance Studio was registered in 1995.

Obviously, quitting when I confidently know every aspect of residential construction is something to digest over time. I can’t shake the craftsman that is my inherited ability. I will always be a woodworker. …just not for you.

Treehouse

I just noticed this will be the third entry in a row coincidentally posted on the 18th of the month.
This week, I’ve been hired to build a treehouse. I’ve found some great resources online at The Treehouse Guide and Treehouse Workshop. Treehouse workshop has a decent resources/links page. I’ve found, on these sites, some beautiful craftsmanship.

I’d be glad to have a source for rustic boards instead of the Home Depot fare. I’d be happy to have a budget for board and batten or cedar shakes instead of plywood and asphalt. We’ll just have to see what this week brings.

Although I’ve drawn up some plans, I’m taking each step of this job one at a time. So much so that I won’t know the size or shape of the platform until I’m done framing it tomorrow. I’ll try to make some nice knee braces and carefully attach this structure soundly and with minimal invasion of this cool old pine tree.

Large deck in Stratford, CT

I’m building a 16′ X 25′ deck with a screened porch in Stratford, Ct.

Working with a friend to complete this project, it’s coming along nicely.

After demolition of the old deck and passing the footing inspection we got started with the framing. Here are some pictures:
Day 1, Setting the ledger, building beams and setting the posts beneath.
Day 2, Framing the floor joists and adding Simpson strong-ties
Day 3, Installing some decking, finishing framing, Friday clean-up.
Day 4, Finish flooring
Day 5, Build stairs, rim joist, bolt and cut-off beams

What happened to WoodDance.com website!

December 18th, 2007 I was working with some of my mySQL databases. I wasn’t thinking for the second when I deleted an entire website that I had not backed up. That website was a blog where I posted carpentry updates.

In lieu of rebuilding what’s lost there I decided to turn wooddance.com into a blog. The old site, pages and galleries are all on my computer and I will try and pay some attention when I find time to breath.

This new site will allow me to update in a more frequent and personal manner and to easier share photos of current work. I think it’s going to be worth the fresh start and loss of design.

creating and replacing some very interesting fascia

In July of 2001 I replaced a small piece of fascia board on a Frank Lloyd Wright house. Making these replacement pieces was a lot of fun because of the interesting shape. I made a template for the router and then chiseled out the corners.
Take a look at these pictures, cool stuff!

In this picture you can see my two most-favored tools; a blue steel Japanese chisel and a fine tooth Japanese dado saw. When I eventually learned to sharpen my chisels my life as a carpenter evolved.
